CAB-171-15S has the lowest butyryl content in the series of Eastman cellulose acetate butyrates. Films prepared from CAB-171-15S offer superior toughness and hardness as compared with films prepared from other mixed esters. Also, coating based on CAB-171-15S,which has less solubility and compatibility than the higher-butyryl CABs,usually offer excellent resistance to chemicals, oils, and greases. These features provide advantages for applications such as wire coatings and airplane lacquers. Properties CAB-171-15S is supplied in dry, flake form. It si an unfiltered product and as such will contain some partially acetylated cellulose fiber.Typical properties for CAB-171-15S are shown in Table 1. a Typical properties are reported for information only.Eastman makes no representation that the material in any particular shipment will conform to the listed properties. bViscosity determined by ASTM Method D 1343 in the solution described as Formula A,ASTM Method D 817.Viscosities in poises converted to ASTM seconds equivalent to &#118alues obtained under ASTM Method D 817. cDetermination of color and haze is made on CAB solutions using Pt-Co color standards and a monodisperse latex suspension for haze with a Gardner Model XL-835 colorimeter. Applications The excellent toughness, color stability, and dimensional stability inherent in coatings made with CAB-171-15S are of interest in many lacquer applications such as lacquers for plastics and photographic processes. CAB-171-15S may also be used in the formulation of airplane lacquers because it provides a lightweight, durable coating which is highly resistant to the extremes of weather. In airplane dope formulations, the less hazardous nature of a CAB ester as compared with nitrocellulose is also an important advantage. The outstanding oil, moisture, and weather resistance of CAB-171-15S,along with its toughness, may be used to advantage in wire and cable lacquers. These coatings are applied to ignition cables and other specialized wiring that must have good electrical properties and resistance to grease and abrasion. The relatively high melting range of CAB-171-15S is also advantageous in those electrical applications where softening or melting of the insulation would be detrimental. |
